Day 6
Tillamook, OR to Newport, OR
Daily Miles - 74.2
Cumulative Miles - 508.7
Average Speed - 10.4 MPH
Max Speed -  29.5 MPH
Ride Time -  7 Hours 5 Minutes

First item of business today is to give credit to my eagle eye daughter - Rachel.  She asked me yesterday to look at my riding plan spreadsheet to see if anything looked strange.  I told her I didn't see anything wrong.  She said to check the year.  All my riding dates are 2017.  I guess that means I am already done!  Time to head home.  Thanks Rachel.

I got up this morning and as I was preparing to head out, it started to rain.  I don't like purposely going out riding in the rain.  I checked my trusty Weather.com radar app to see when the rain was going to end.  There was no rain showing up on the radar???  Does that mean it wasn't raining?  I ended up getting started and it stopped not too long down the road.  The worst part was the road spray from all the vehicles.  Yucky and dirty.

Cloudy and rainy start to the day.

This guy like the rain about as much as I did this morning.  He was hiding under a tree to stay out of the rain.  I actually stopped and backtracked a little to get this picture.  It was pretty funny.

As the clouds cleared and the sky turned blue, things started picking up.  The things you see when you are cruising at a whopping 12 miles per hour.  Not sure what "Hemlock" is, but this deer sure had an issue with it.

Beautiful Oregon coastline

I arrived in Newport.  I am very happy I made it today.  This whole Pacific Coast ride idea was planned around the June 2nd Marathon event.  That is why I had to push so hard the first few days.

After checking in for tomorrow and picking up my bib number, I went over to where they were having the pre-event pasta dinner.  I did not pay for a ticket, but was going to at the door.  After meeting the event organizer and telling him about my story, he paid for my pasta dinner ticket.  He would not let me pay.  He said anyone crazy enough to attempt what I am was worth the donation to the American Legion that was putting on the dinner.  I then spent about an hour eating with a couple of participants who were very interested in all my stories over the past week.  Newport is a pretty cool town and tomorrow should be enjoyable.

  2. Doc, Have been out of pocket traveling, but not as cool as you are doing it, airports, delays, and long flights. But was so happy to finally get back on here and see what you are up to and how far you have gone.. Love the pictures, and reading your experience, riding in the rain doesn't sound all that great but you are in the Northwest where it rains all the time. Hopefully your Marathon is dry, I can't imagine running in the rain for fun..!! Nice to hear that folks are treating you well, for me the experience you are going through is a lot about that as well, riding, camping, meeting folks along the way who after talking with you are as amazed as we all are that you continue to do things like this... BUT in the same breathe "why on earth would someone (YOU) plan a Marathon in the middle of a cross country bike ride... Must be something in the DeWitt gene pool.. Hope you not running in your bike shoes, that would just be mad..!! hehe. Best to you, and get pedaling, running..
