I got rolling early this morning since I knew it was going to be a pretty long ride.  I would reach the border and then have to turn around to return to my final stopping point for the day near the airport.  I had to not only complete the riding, but arrange for and pick up a box for my bicycle and change my travel arrangements.  Whew...that's a lot.

I was on my way.  I rode through several beach towns and enjoyed watching the surfers out on calm, clean waves.  There was no wind today and there were a lot of surfers out.  Hmmm...it is Tuesday.  Doesn't anyone have to work?  I guess they could say the same about that guy riding the bike.

I made it to La Jolla and was excited to be headed down a nice little decline.  Then I was quickly aware that my rear tire was going flat.  Flat number 4.  Its hard stopping when going 25 plus MPH with a completely flat rear tire.  In all, my expectation was for about 6 flat tires.  So only 4 was not too bad.  As I was repairing the tire, I family came over to see what I was doing.  There were two younger children asking lots of questions, so I got to give them a lesson on how to change a tire.

Later down the road, I got my first glimpse of San Diego.

Once I made it into San Diego, I found out that I had to take a  ferry to get across to Coronado Island.  The ride was cool because I got to see some big Naval ships.

Getting to the border was a bit interesting.  The roads got quieter as I got closer.  Fewer people, cars and houses.  Then I turned on the the last road which ended up being a dirt road out to the coast.  It made me a little uneasy just because I wasn't sure where I was headed.  The comforting thing was all the Customs and Border Protection vehicles patrolling the area.  They were everywhere.

I made it to the end of the road at about 3:30 PM.

El Monumento Internacional

Behind the gate is the actual monument marking the border, but people are not allowed to freely go see it.  You have to arrange a special showing with the Customs and Border Protection personnel.  It looked like it could only be done on the weekends.  No biggie.

The lighthouse is on the Mexico side.  There is also a stadium next to the lighthouse and they were having some sort of fiesta with some loud music.

All done!  For now.
Going back to Virginia to rest for a few days before having to finalize things for the Iron Man Lake Placid event later in July.  Yes, I am crazy.

Thank you all for following me along this adventure.  Knowing you were all checking in on me kept me accountable and pushing forward.  I had to keep going because everyone was watching.  Thank you for all your comments, thoughts and prayers.  They made all the difference.
