Before heading out on my ride today, I had the privilege of getting to visit with my grandmother. She will be turning 98 years old next month. And she is on top of things. She has a busier daily schedule that I do. It was so great to get to spend some time with her. Thank you to the Kesslers for housing me for the night and taking me over to visit grandma.
You can also see that I have gotten quite a tan over the last few weeks.
I was dropped off right down the street from where my grandmother lives. I discussed the route to take that would get me back down to the coast. I had it all set out and got going. Then I remembered one other person I wanted to visit. I quickly consulted Google Maps to see how far out of my way the visit would be. It was actually only about 8 miles and in the same general direction. So, I made the recommended turn and off I went. I arrived at a golf course and there were no more roads in sight. But Google Maps was telling me to go straight. I saw an ATV riding down a dirt road and figured out that was where I was being directed to go. Google Maps had not done me wrong up to this point.
Well, it was a mountain bike trail ride. Oh my goodness! I was going down a path with rocks and tree roots. I got to one point and actually had to go through a creek, which then turned into two more creeks. Not what I was planning on while carrying all my gear.
After about 4 miles, I said to myself, "Enough!" I was riding under a bridge and looked for a way to get up to that road. I ended up right back on the road that I started out riding on this morning. It was a little bit of a longer route, but definitely smoother and faster. I will say, it was an adventure.
I made it to my last visit stop. After all that craziness on the dirt path, I knocked on the door and no one was home. My support team (wife and daughter back home) sent a few texts and made a phone call and Traci was on her way home to see me. I am so happy I made the extra detour.
Back on the road. I went through several beach towns, past San Onofre (which was my favorite surfing spot of all) and then through Camp Pendleton. For those of you who were wondering, you can ride a bicycle through Camp Pendleton. There is a pretty nice bike path. No pictures of Camp Pendleton since I didn't want to get in any trouble.
Tomorrow will be my final day! I head down to the border and then turn around and ride back to San Diego. My final logistical task is to locate a bike store to get a box for my bike to get it home. Then I have to see about getting a flight change to get back home.
Almost done. Wow!
Congrats on an amazing journey! What are you feeling now? Happy? Sad? Relieved? Exhausted?
ReplyDeleteYou may be sad to find that this tee shirt is no longer available...

Again, we sure enjoyed seeing you and your visit. Almost over. We hope you don't have trouble finding a box. Don't go to far south on your last day. Be safe. Godspeed.
ReplyDeleteBD - let’s do dinner a few weeks after you get back to hear more details. Please. Wally
