Flat Tires - 3
I had my 3rd flat today. I was cruising through a pretty sketchy area since I turned on a different street than my route was taking me. I didn't think it was a big deal until my surroundings were less than pleasant. Then, a blowout! The previous two flats were slow leaks and I could keep riding for a bit to get to a safe place to repair the flat. This time, the air in the tire was gone instantly and I had no choice but to stop and fix the flat in this unpleasant place. Needless to say, I had to watch my back while working on the tire.
I only took one photo of the coast today due to all that was going on. This photo was taken in Huntington Beach. You can see a couple of oil drilling rigs in the ocean and in the distance Catalina Island.
Two more days of riding left!

Today was a busy day. It started off early with visiting.
I stopped in Hermosa Beach to visit neighbors that I used to live across the street from - Karl and Maxine. We spent talking about the bike ride and catching up since the last time we were together.
Next, I headed over to Redondo Beach to visit with the parents of my best friend Kasey from way back in middle and high school. Only his mother Toni was there since his dad Tim was out on his own bike ride for the day. I am not the only one that goes on long bike rides! Since this was a surprise visit, I was not expecting them to be there and was so happy that at least his mother was home.
Then I headed over to Lomita to see a former coworker from back in my TRW days. Another surprise visit and it was fortunate that Gail was not feeling well this morning so she did not go to church. That kept her home for when I arrived. Her son and daughter were also home and they said "Oh, this is the guy riding the bike?"

The timing of the riding days was perfect. My stopping point was in Coto de Caza to stay the night at my Aunt's home. Gary and Betsy graciously took me into their home for the evening. It just so happened that today was their grand daughter's graduation celebration. She received her masters degree from UC Irvine. We all got together for dinner to celebrate her accomplishment and I got to spend time with them all in one place. Perfect timing.

Doc, in Kenya and have missed a number of days now. But here I am again... Why do you look like some of the zebras I have seen roaming the country side here.. Nice to see that you have been able to stop and see some friends, family, such a rewarding thing after such a long ride. I can't believe there are only two more days of it. YOU ARE AN AMAZING MAN, ATHLETE..
ReplyDeleteRead through the past days missed, exciting times and sights. Sorry to hear about your latest flat tire.. Watch your sixes, from a note a week or so ago.. Further, nice to see that a few days your minimum/maximum speeds came up... Glad you were holding on tightly.. Best Doc
We are so glad to have seen you, having a short visit and being a small bit of your adventure. This is an amazing accomplishment, something that you can certainly can be proud of and never forget. It was a pleasure having you here. Almost over.
ReplyDeleteGreat ride and stories to go with it. Nothing like being up close and personal with ocean waves breaking on the rocks along the way, sunsets sinking in the water, shorten views on foggy rides , aggressive bikers/drivers, and not to be forgotten, dog chases, bee tending, and blue ox sightings. Love the new fashion trend in sun tanning in the west of Tiger stripes! Wishing you safe final miles on your bike and trip home! Best, Dale
