Day 14
Fort Bragg, CA to Gualala, CA
Daily Miles - 61.0
Cumulative Miles - 1,031.8
Average Speed - 10.6 MPH
Max Speed - 35.3 MPH
Ride Time - 5 Hours 45 Minutes
Daily Elevation Gain 4,400 Feet, Loss 4,429 Feet
Cumulative Elevation Gain 42,122 Feet, Loss 42,110 Feet
Flat Tires - 1
Today got off to a damp start. I am not sure if it had rained over night or if it was just really wet being close to the ocean. Regardless, it was time to head out. The road was wet, but not enough to get too messy.
I left Fort Bragg and then went through Mendocino. It was a neat little town. As I passed through all the other towns today, I realized that it was Saturday and there are a lot of activities that go on in these places. Especially since summertime is arriving.
The coast was looking really nice today once the clouds cleared a bit. Although, the wind picked up. I can't say it was a headwind or a tailwind. Riding along the curving coastline has me changing directions so many times that the wind hits me from all directions. The wind was generally going in the "right" direction, which was southeast. No complaints at all!
Check out this tree. There were a few like this on this person's property. That seems like a lot of work, but it was really neat. There is a top part that is groomed also. Not sure how they do that.
It is pretty cool how I am riding right along the coast and on the other side of the road is so much farm land. Cows, horses, sheep and I am sure other animals. Most vacation beaches are so packed with population and business that there is no way you would have this.
In a few more days, I am pretty sure it will get more populated and busy.
I ended my riding in a town named Gualala. It is a small town, but there is an art festival going on today that has brought people from all around. I wanted to ride some more miles today, but there are no services available for quite a few miles south. Better to rest here and get a fresh start tomorrow.
The big wow today was that I passed the 1,000 mile mark! Still about 800 miles to to. Keep riding.

I met another cyclist today. A young lady who lives in San Francisco. She took a week off from work and is riding round trip from San Francisco to Mendocino. She was there today and is now heading back south. It is great to share stories and hear about what and why the others are doing their adventures.
I don't think I have any problems with speeding. I thought it was funny that this one actually registered my speed. Normally, they do not pick up bicycles. I know...it only says 7 MPH, but that was because I slowed down and took the picture while riding.

ReplyDeleteCongratulations BD on reaching the 1,000 mile mark!!
A journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single pedal. SE
I was thinking today that your Pacific Coast Adventure has taken you into a surreal "twilight zone" of joyfulness and peacefulness. A dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity.
You have extracted yourself from your daily interactions, occurrences and routines. I imagine your exposure to the media, local, national and international news is less than usual.
The days are not attributed to a certain day of the week (weekday or weekend)....so far you have been having a rocking 17 day weekend!
You are having quality time allowing your mind to wander and explore thoughts inspired by the views, terrain, and people you are meeting along the way.
You literally are "stopping to smell the roses" and being "present".
“Be present to the people in front
of you from moment to moment.
Electronics and technology have a
way of clouding our vision for the people
sitting next to us. Uncloud your life, look around.
Be present.”

(to be fair though, credit goes to some blessings of technology - including us getting to read your daily adventure and reflections in real time (nightly)!!
BIke on!
Over 1000 miles and you seem to still be going strong. This has got to be an experience that money can't buy. Tomorrow you will be going through Bodega Bay. I think that is where Alfred Hitchcock made the Movie "The Birds". Keep on biking and stay safe. God speed.
ReplyDeleteYou go, man. fit for life.
ReplyDeleteWell done Doc, had Kelo 3 here at the house this week-end (headed to requal) says to say hello. More than half way and terrific stories to tell, beautiful country you are riding through. Keep pedaling..
ReplyDeleteUmmm...New landscaping ideas? I think so! I will have the tree-trimmers ready for you right when you get home! 😂
