A day of climbing hills!

I left Garberville bright and early and it was a good thing.  I didn't think the hills were ever going to stop.  I would see a corner and think that was it and beyond the turn would be a downhill...nope, more uphills.  The total uphill climbing today was 5,748 feet.  That's more than one mile high.

I did take time to grab a few photos along the way.

I was warned by a friend that Bigfoot roamed these areas.  I guess he was right.  No sightings today, but there were some places where the trees and bushes along the side of the road were rustling about. 😃

Surrounded by trees - more redwoods.  They are so close to the road, that the shoulder has been taken away because the tree is so large.  It is easier to move the road than to move one of those huge trees.

I left US 101 and made it onto California 1.  I will be spending a lot of time on Highway 1 for the rest of the ride.

After some more hill climbing, I finally reached the coast again.  The marine layer was hanging around, but the ocean and the waves were a nice relief from the forest.  I am not complaining about all the climbing.  As I always say, for every uphill, there is a downhill.  I sure had a lot of those today as well.  Coming down out of the forest was a downhill that was close to ten miles.  Fun stuff!!

  1. Gary here: In the morning you will go through Mendocino. I was only in Mendocino once and I really liked it. I had just wished there was a major airport close by. Coast ride for quit awhile, I think you will enjoy it. Keep on peddling. Stay safe.

  2. Bigfoot
I saw Bigfoot in the wood,
Just a shadow where he stood,
A giant standing in the dark,
    Vanished without leaving a mark.

    Howling, knocking, crashing thru trees,
A shiver up my spine and a knock in my knees,
People say I am as crazy as you can get,
What I saw I'll never forget.

If you find yourself alone in the trees,
Smelling some flowers and enjoying the breeze,
You may sense that you're not alone,
But right in the middle of Bigfoot's home.
