Day 10
Gold Beach, OR to Crescent City, CA
Daily Miles - 55.2
Cumulative Miles - 746.4
Average Speed - 11.0 MPH
Max Speed - 32.9 MPH
Ride Time - 4 Hours 59 Minutes
Short day of riding today. I got a later start due to the long ride yesterday. The worst part about this morning was it took me about ten miles to find a good seat position. I could not get comfortable and had to take several breaks. It happens!
To take my mind of the seat, I enjoyed more scenery. I am fascinated at the rock structures in the ocean along the coast. I was wondering today how they got there and how they remain there with all the weathering from the constant waves beating on them.
I made it though the state of Oregon.
California is obviously a long state. I will be riding the coast here for over 1,100 miles. Although I was born and raised in Southern California, I have never been north of San Francisco. So, there will be new sites to see. I am excited about seeing the redwoods that I have heard so much about.
Thanks everyone for continuing to follow my adventure. I am enjoying the comments and knowing that you are all out there with me.

I especially liked this one. It has a tunnel through the middle of it. I actually spent a few minutes watching the waves move through the opening. So cool.
I have a question to pose for everyone out there. I understand when driving in a car down the rode, bugs splat on the windshield due to the speed of the car. My question is of course about riding a bike down the road. I am amazed at how many times I get whacked in the face or arms by big bugs. What is it with the aerodynamics of the bike riding that draws the bugs right at my face? There have been several recently that were painful.
As I depart Oregon, I just have to give some time to the cannabis culture. It is everywhere. The green crosses advertising the stores are all over in these small towns. Medical and recreational sales, but the recreational usage is quite apparent. I saw on several occasions people walking down the sidewalk smoking. I know it is becoming more wide spread and accepted, but it is so strange.
The first thing you see when coming into the state of Oregon after the Welcome to Oregon sign is this huge store sign. Speechless!

Tomorrow you will be going through the Red Woods. They are beautiful. At the Trees of Mystery they used to have an aerial tram that would take you to the top of a Mtn. Beautiful view.

Gary here: When you get to the Trees of Mystery, say Hi to my old friends, Paul Bunyon and Babe the Blue Ox. I met them the first time when I was 9 years old. Stay safe and God speed.
There you are in California and a tune comes to my mind.. Perhaps when winter 2018-2019 is upon us in the north east, your thoughts turn to this next leg of your trails...("if I as in ..." Arcata, Weott, Westport, etc In lieu of LA)

I wonder if any bugs or flies have entered your mouth. On a positive note, good source of protein. 🐜 🚴🏻
ReplyDeleteI remember trapping a bee inside my helmet... most unpleasant. I hear that drivers high on weed drive slower and more cautiously. You should be grateful ;)
ReplyDeleteToday Rachel showed me a picture of your bike next to a Redwood shortly after she enjoyed a phone call from you. How magnificent! I shared with her that Redwoods have a fascinating root system that is interconnected with other Redwoods to hold each other up. I often think God is speaking to us from one piece of His creation to the other. That design is in both the Redwoods and those created in His image. To share deeply with those who are like-minded is to build roots with others that are interconnected and help hold each other up in the storms of life and when things are going good. He is SO good! Maybe He has a message for you in those bugs too, haha!
ReplyDeleteBuy the stocks and make some $$.. As for the bugs, maybe you should wear a mask of some kind to deflect the pecky insects, skull/cross bone to match the cannabis culture..?? Just a thought. Keep pedaling Doc..
