I spent the last few days with Ma and Pa in Bellingham, Washington. They were kind enough to host me and feed me some really good food in preparation for my journey. Thanks go to both of you for showing me the local sites and driving me all over Northwestern Washington.
A picture with my mother as they were dropping me off at the Canadian border. We had a "fun" experience trying to find the park where the international border is located. We ended up in the line to enter Canada! Oops. We tried to turn out before going too far and over came the Customs Police. They were very helpful and got us back to where we needed to go.
And so it began. The structure on the left is the Peace Arch that stands right on the border. It represents the peace between the United States and Canada.
My bike sits next to the marker for the international border. As you can see, I did not go on the Canadian side so I don't have to report any foreign travel.
I was out on rural roads for most of the ride. I turned the corner and caught a view of Mount Baker. This mountain is snow covered all year round due to its elevation. It was so amazing.
Today just so happened to be the annual Ski to Sea competition for the area. It is a team relay event with seven or eight stages. Competitors start at Mount Baker with a cross country skiing stage followed by downhill skiing. Then they have a bike ride, cyclocross, running, canoeing and kayaking stage. We went to cheer them all on at the finish line.
