Day 5
Astoria, OR to Tillamook, OR
Daily Miles - 69.1
Cumulative Miles - 434.5
Average Speed - 10.4 MPH
Max Speed - 29.6 MPH
Ride Time - 6 Hours 37 Minutes

Today was a relaxing day when compared to the prior three days.  Less than 70 miles.  I got a later start since I knew it would be a shorter ride.

Leaving Astoria, I took a little time to check out the small seaside town.  What a neat place.  This bridge connects Astoria with Washington.  I did not have to ride over it yesterday thank goodness.  It was high and long and sketchy.

A few pictures as I was leaving Astoria.

The local news weather person yesterday said that Oregon was going to break a record for May.  Today would have been 27 days without measurable rain.  Then I had to ride my bike through the state.  It rained!  There was one black cloud in the sky and it was right over me.  It made the ground a little wet and just got my jacket wet.  I was dry about ten minutes later.  No biggie.

Not too long after leaving Astoria and traveling through a lot of Lewis and Clark related locations, I came to the Oregon Coast.  It is designated a bike route.  I challenge that since it was a shoulder with not much separation from the incredibly fast traffic.

How about this.  The beach towns in Oregon have tsunami hazard zones.  As you approach them on a downhill, you see the sign "Entering" and then as you head out and back uphill, the sign says "Leaving".  They take this seriously.

Ahh...the Pacific Coast.

It is hard to see, but there is a tunnel down there.  It was a tight squeeze.  That was not the bad part.  It was terribly loud.  I don't think I have ever been in a tunnel with traffic rushing by.  My ears were ringing until I made it out.  I do like the tunnel though.  Without it, I would have to had to ride over that mountain.

Some pictures of the coast.  I was riding along the coast line way up on the side of a cliff.

I thought this was very strange.  There are rock formations in the water.  The weird thing was there was a tree that had grown on the rocks.  How does that happen?

I made it to my final destination of Tillamook, Oregon.  Home of the Tillamook cheese manufacturer.  The whole town smells like cheese!

Tomorrow will be about another 70 mile day.  Heading into Newport, Oregon for the marathon.  Believe it or not, it will be nice to be off the bike for Saturday, but not too sure about participating in a marathon.  I plan to complete it.  It will be a slow run/walking day for sure.

  1. Gary here: I got stopped on top of that shaky Astoria Bridge once because they were painting it. One way traffic. Stopped for lunch in Tillamook. ordered a hamburger that was called "garbage burger", it was the size of the plate. I had to just laugh. Stay safe and God speed.

  6. Seriously cool, beautiful pictures, even the tunnel sounded like fun, except for the noise. The cliffs look awesome.
